Chasing a 312-run target, India were off to a very slow start. Shikhar Dhawan struggled to find any momentum. But it was Shubman Gill, who kept the scorecard ticking with a fine 49-ball 43. India could only score 42 in the first powerplay before a brief rain break.

But that is where India lost the momentum with Romario Shepherd removing Shikhar Dhawan. Soon, Kyle Mayers struck and sent Shubman Gill back. The next to go was Suryakumar Yadav as he too was cleaned up by Mayers, reducing India to 78/3 in 17.2 overs. But Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer took charge.

Although India did not lose wickets, Samson and Iyer struggled initially. However, they shrugged off the initial lull and then took charge of the chase, smashing 99-run stand off 94 balls. Shreyas Iyer smashed 71-ball 63, his second consecutive half-century and 7th in 8 innings against West Indies. Sanju Samson also kept his India place for the time being with a maiden half-century.

India lost wickets at regular intervals with Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda and Avesh Khan departing. But Axar Patel had other plans. Only in the team due to Ravindra Jadeja’s knee injury, Axar made a big statement. He played a match-winning knock of 35-ball 64 to hand India their 12th consecutive ODI series win.

Earlier, opting to bat, West Indies posted a massive 311/6 total. The hosts were off to a great start with Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers adding 65 runs for the opening wicket. Shai Hope was the star of the show on his 100th ODI. The Windies wicketkeeper-batter smashed 115 off 135 balls to keep Indian attack at bay. But it was also largely due to the fact that Indian pacers were not good enough.

Hope brought up yet another 50-run stand with Samarah Brooks and then a 115-run stand with Nicholas Pooran. Avesh Khan looked very ordinary on his ODI debut while Shardul Thakur, despite bagging 3 wickets, was once again very expensive. Yuzvendra Chahal also had an off day, conceding 69 runs in exchange for a wicket. Siraj though bowled really well even though he did not get any wickets.

But it was a 115-run stand between Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope which helped West Indies get closer to the 300-run mark. Pooran smashed 74 off 77. Romario Shepherd and Rovman Powell applied the finishing touch, taking West Indies to 311/6.

India Innings:

  • WICKET! Sanju Samson has to depart. He is miles away from the crease as Kyle Mayers throw deflects off Romario Shepherd to hit the stumps.
  • FIFTY! Samson extends his run with Team India for at least 4 ODIs with his maiden ODI 50.
  • WICKET! Shreyas Iyer departs. It brings an end to a 99-run stand between Iyer and Samson. But Iyer would be disappointed. Joseph has managed to trap him leg-before. Iyer goes for a review but it turns futile.
