Axar however kept his cool and left nothing to chance, scoring his maiden ODI half-century on Sunday. He reached his fifty of just 27 balls, the fastest by an Indian in ODIs against the West Indies. The 28-year-old laced his innings with three fours and five sixes. His five sixes were the most by an Indian batsman in an ODI batting at No.7 or lower, breaking MS Dhoni’s record. Axar was handed an opportunity only after Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the first two games due to an injury. Axar has spent most of his career as an understudy to Jadeja, and the Delhi Capitals is now making the most of his opportunities to shine.
Speaking after the match, Patel said that it was a special moment for him having scored his maiden fifty. The 28-year-old added that he was pleased with his performance and added that the IPL experience helped him seal the deal for his side.
He said, “I think this is a special one. It came at a crucial time and also helped the team to win the series. We have done the same in the IPL. We just needed to remain calm and keep the intensity up. I was playing an ODI after close to 5 years. I would want to continue performing like this for my team.”
