On being asked about who will open the innings in the 1st T20I, Rathour said “We haven’t really decided that yet, we still have a couple of days to go. We had a travel day and rest day, so today we have our first practice day, once we get to look at the wicket and the kind of surface we are playing.”
India has two talented options in Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad, about whom the batting coach said “We’ll then see, we have options available, KL is out I understand, we have Ishan and Ruturaj in the mix, so we will see.”
Rishabh Pant also has the ability to open the innings, but Rathour hinted that the management is planning to utilize him as a middle-order option. “Rishabh is a fantastic player, he can play good cricket up the order but it depends what the team needs and what we are looking at. I have no doubt that he will be in team post-2023 too but we can utilize him more precisely in the middle order or lower order,” he added.
- Ishan Kishan is the favourite to open with Rohit Sharma while Ruturaj Gaikwad will be desperate for his chance.
- Gaikwad, KL Rahul’s replacement, made his way to the India squad after a record of 4 consecutive centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, he is yet to get a chance in Men in Blue colours.
- Ishan Kishan had opened against West Indies in 1st ODI and managed to score 28 runs but he warmed the bench in the remaining two games.
- Ruturaj Gaikwad has scored 35 runs in his two T20I matches.
- Ishan Kishan has scored 56 runs in the five T20I matches he has played.
India will take on the Caribbean boys for the first T20I on 16th February at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, and amongst the many dilemmas, the most prominent is perhaps the opening slot with KL Rahul not being available for the series.
