Shubman Gill’s tryst with the No.3 spot in Test cricket has not worked out well. Coming into bat after the openers put on 139 for the opening wicket. The onus was on Shubman to continue the flow of runs and build India towards a sizeable first innings score. He started off well with a couple of boundaries. However, Kemar Roach put a halt to his chase, getting him out on a 12-ball 10. This follows a 10-ball 6 in the 1st Test in Dominica.
Shubman’s struggles are concerning with this being India’s last test for the next 5 months. Rohit and Co will travel to South Africa next for a three-Test series. With Gill struggling, India does not have a No.3 in place heading into a vital series of the World Test Championship Cycle 2023-25. This comes after Shubman himself asked to be slotted in at one drop as India begins its transition phase.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has nailed his spot at the top of the order, meaning Gill has his work cut out. With the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sarfaraz Khan and others all waiting in the wings, Shubman will have to get his form in order in the longest form of the game.
