But Suryakumar Yadav has thrown his hat into the ring with regular bowling in the nets to stay in contention. Follow IND vs WI 2nd ODI Live Updates on InsideSport.
“Back home, I do a lot of net sessions. The motivation comes automatically. Definitely, whenever there is a chance, I will bowl also. Whenever they feel they can use me, I am always available,” Suryakumar Yadav said ahead of the 2nd ODI on Wednesday.

Ever since Hardik Pandya has been limited to batting due to his persistent back problems, India have missed a genuine all-rounder who can get India wickets. The top 5 in India’s Playing XI including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul do not bow, complicating the situation. While Shreyas Iyer did bowl a few overs in South Africa, the desperate search for a sixth bowling option continues. Suryakumar Yadav wants to make himself available, bringing in his bowling ability.
Even though Rohit Sharma emphasised the importance of having a sixth bowler, he used only five in the first ODI and has often been reluctant to go with someone other than tried and tested bowlers. In the 1st ODI, Washington Sundar played the role of fifth bowler and even though India did not need the sixth option it could be important in tough matches in away conditions.

IND vs WI: What are the options India have as sixth bowler in Hardik’s absence?
- Venkatesh Iyer – Failed to impress
- Deepak Chahar – Did well with the bat but when Jasprit Bumrah and Mohd Shami return, his place will not be guaranteed.
- Shardul Thakur – He is being considered as a genuine all-rounder but the team management is yet to trust him as a genuine finisher.
- Washington Sundar – He has become a fifth bowling option rather than a full-fledged all-rounder.
- Deepak Hooda & Shahrukh Khan – The two have been called in for their all-round ability and are considered for the sixth bowling option.
- Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav – Both have been asked to sharpen bowling skills and are on standby as the sixth option.
- However, Suryakumar Yadav had been reported for his illegal action during IPL and he hasn’t bowled in international or IPL since.

Shahrukh Khan was seen bowling in the netsFormer India opener Wasim Jaffer believes India will need to find a sixth bowling option and give chances to the likes of Deepak Hooda or Shahrukh Khan who bowls.
“The one drawback with this Indian team is not many batsmen who can bowl and not many bowlers who can bat. That is one thing that puts down this team compared to Dhoni’s team which had Sehwag, Sachin, Yuvraj as bowling options. That’s why our batting becomes very sparse. Then, you have to play five bowlers and if all five can’t bat, it becomes very difficult,” Wasim Jaffer told InsideSport on InsideCricket platform.
