“I had no idea Shami did that (run-out), he was batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we cannot get him out like that. Not something that we thought off, hats off to him, he played really well,” Rohit said at the post-match interview.
Speaking more about the incident, it all happened on the fourth ball of the 50th over. After Shami’s run-out appeal was withdrawn by India, the Sri Lanka skipper creamed a boundary to complete his century on the penultimate ball of the contest. Finishing things in style for the crestfallen Sri Lankan side, Shanaka then smoked a handsome six on the final ball to end the high-scoring encounter at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
To note, this is Shanaka’s first ODI century. The senior batter was in exquisite touch during the T20I series as well. He finished as the second-leading run-getter in the series behind Suryakumar Yadav. Shanaka amassed 124 runs in three games averaging 62. He played at an astonishing strike rate of 187.88 hitting five fours and 11 maximums. Shanaka was also adjudged player of the match in the second T20I match.
Speaking about his batting position, Shanaka said, “I think I’m doing the basics well, I think I should bat higher in the T20Is, but the team needs me to bat at 6 with Bhanuka at 5. With two matches to go, Shanaka will be looking to extend his dominance over the Men in Blue and try to win their first-ever bilateral series in India.
