“Avishka suffered a serious knee injury during practice, which requires surgery” Senior SLC official told NewsWire.
“He will most probably get the surgery done in Australia, he could be out for atleast 3 months,” the source added.
Avishka Fernando could be out of Cricket for 3 to 6 months. He is an attacking cricketer with the ability to hit sixes at will which he hit during LPL.
With Fernando’s injury, three players could be unavailable for selection for India Tour and final T20I against Australia– Nuwan Thushara (injured), Ramesh Mendis (injured), while Binura Fernando (COVID-19), Wanindu Hasaranga (COVID-19) already ruled out.
Ramesh Mendis has fractured his right thumb whilst batting during training. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation work.
Nuwan Thushara suffered a left side strain while bowling during the 3rd T20I played against Australia. Thushara commenced rehabilitation work and misses the remainder of the series.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is likely to come with a squad announcement in the next 48 hours ahead of the India tour.
The tour was supposed to start with the two-match Test, but now will begin with T20Is, with the first match being played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on February 24.
The second and third T20Is will take place in Dharamsala on February 26 and 27.
Following the T20I series, the teams will play two Tests, which form a part of the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Mohali will host the first Test from March 4 to 8, while the second Test will be played in Bengaluru from March 12 to 16.
