SriLanka Cricket CODE Signals – What are these CODE SIGNALS? Lankan coach used code signals to guide his team in Asia Cup to two back-to-back victories against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

While many criticized Silverwood’s methods, Silverwood declared he is with in rules to send instructions to the team in the ground.

“There’s no rocket science. They are just suggestions for the captain at what would be a good match at a particular point for a batsman when he is on strike. There’s a lot of teams doing it now, it’s just as simple as it is, really. It’s just giving suggestions that the captain can use, it’s not telling him how to captain. It’s just the suggestion from the side,” Silverwood defended.

Sri Lankan Coach is using codes like 2D, D5, A2, C4, D etc. No one knows what exactly these code means. Silverwood will use these codes against India as well.

IND vs SL Live: Why Silverwood’s code signals method is not liked by a lot of head coaches and team

  • Silverwood had also used the same code signals method when he was head coach of England.
  • At that time former England captain Micheal Vaughan had criticized Silverwood saying it is not required.
  • Former Afghanistan head coach Lance Klusner said he does not like this system of code signals as he feels the captain is enough to take calls.
  • Sri Lanka’s head coach though supports this method and opines it just adds value to the team.
  • While there is no guarantee that it will always give favorable results, it does give Shanaka other options to explore.

“Those are signals that keep and give the captain options, that’s all. You remind the captain of potential matchups and give him an option. It is then up to the captain whether he wants to use them or not. It is only done when the team is fielding. – Micky Arthur, speaking to Cricintra said.

“I am not sure how their system works but I imagine that it is a signal telling them which bowler to bowl and when. Then it’s up to the captain to make a call”. – Andy Flower was quoted by the same publication.

Lance Klussner, who was a head coach with the Afghanistan team till recently, does not see value in it.

“No, I don’t like this system (of sending coded signals to the captain). I never used it (during my time with the Afghanistan coaching), It may sound interesting, but it’s not new and personally I don’t see value in it. The coach can easily send the messages to the fielding side during over-breaks or drinks interval. If you trust your captain while fielding and your batsman while batting to make the correct decisions there is no need for this messaging”.
