Previously, the Indian Wicketkeeper batsman KL Rahul was on his LAST LEGS. The national Selectors were losing patience with inconsistent Rahul. Ishan Kishan is waiting in the wings despite a DOUBLE Hundred. Rishabh Pant is injured. Talented Sanju Samson is waiting for his chance. Amid all this, pressure on Rahul to save his place across formats is increasing by the day. According to informed sources in Indian camp, the ongoing series vs SriLanka is Rahul’s last chance to salvage his spot in Indian team.

“He now is under tremendous pressure. He no doubt is very very talented but at the same time inconsistent. Selectors are losing patience now. He still has the team management’s backing but all that can change if he can’t score in the ongoing series”, informed an source close to the Indian team management.

Why KL Rahul can lose his place in the team? Without any doubt Rahul’s form last 12-18 months has been very inconsistent across formats. His batting averages, mode of dismissals, fitness issues – all are concern areas for the selectors. Just sample this –

KL Rahul in ODI’s

  • Since 1st JAN 2022: 11 Matches 290 RUNS @ 29
  • Overall ODI Career: 49 Matches 1799 Runs @ 43

KL Rahul in T20 Internationals

  • Since 1st JAN 2022: 16 Matches 434 RUNS @ 28.93
  • Overall T20I Career: 72 Matches 2275 Runs @ 37.75

KL Rahul in Test Matches

  • Since 1st JAN 2022: 45 Matches 2604 RUNS @ 34.26
  • Overall Test Career: 4 Matches 117 Runs @ 17.12

The batting averages across formats for Rahul have fallen almost 30-40% of his overall career. This clearly shows, how Rahul has been struggling to score runs across formats.

Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin was quoted as saying, “Consistency is the problem in KL R ahul’s case. It is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection that is causing problems. ”

He was recently removed as the vice-captain of India’s ODI team, and if he continues his below-par show for some more time, then there are high chances that he might get dropped from the side as well.

“I think Rahul is getting out in a lot of manners. Primarily, it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection first up that is causing problems,” said Azhar, who added that the Lucknow Super Giants skipper should take time and play domestic cricket.

The former skipper, who featured in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs for India during his playing days, added that KL needs to be way more consistent and work on his technical flaws with national team coaches.

“I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul’s case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify his flaws. In my opinion, he is a good player but consistency is missing in his game,” Azharuddin was quoted in an interview with PTI
