Chasing a target of 174, Sri Lanka made it look easy. Pathum Nissanka & Kusal Mendis put up a show, scoring a record-breaking 97-runs opening partnership. It was Sri Lanka’s highest partnership for any wicket against India in T20Is. Nissanka scored a brisk 37-ball 52 laced with 4 fours and 2 sixes.
But then, India made a comeback. Just after the drinks break, Yuzvendra Chahal removed Nissanka and Charith Assalanka in the 12th over. Soon, Rohit Sharma’s Ravichandran Ashwin gamble also paid off as he dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka. Chahal returned for his last over and removed Kusal Mendis, who hammered 37-ball 57. His knock included 4 fours and 3 sixes.
However, that is where India’s fight ended. Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka played it safe and scored exactly as the scoreboard required. The two added an unbeaten 64-run stand off 34 balls to take Sri Lanka home with a ball to spare. Rajapaksa remained unbeaten on 25 off 17 while Shanaka scored an 18-ball 33.

However, despite Chahal-Ashwin bowling bringing India back, India’s two experienced pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya once again. Bhuvneshwar bowled the crucial 19th over but conceded 14 runs without any success. In his 4-over spell, he conceded only 30 runs but did not manage to get a wicket.
Hardik Pandya was once again off-colour with the ball, conceding 35 without any success. Arshdeep Singh bowled the last over brilliantly, conceding just 6 runs but he was pretty ordinary in the powerplay. In his 3.5 overs, he conceded 40 without any wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal looked in good rhythm, bagging three wickets for 34 runs. Ashwin who made a return after warming the bench in the last three games, bagged a wicket for 32 runs.

Earlier, sent to bat, India were off to a horrible start with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli departing within first three overs. Both Rahul and Kohli were to be blamed for poor shot selections. Rahul scored 7-ball 6 while Kohli was cleaned up by three-match-old Dilshan Madushanka for a 4-ball DUCK.
However, Rohit Sharma led India’s fightback. The Indian captain, who had only one half-century in 2022, finally capitalised on his start. Despite India losing two early wickets, Rohit kept the hit on with some brilliant shots. With Suryakumar Yadav, he added 97 runs for the third wicket to take India to 110 in 12.2 overs.

But while Rohit scored a 41-ball 72 with a brilliant strike rate of 175.61, he did not get the same support from Suryakumar Yadav. The No 4 batter, who has shown great form, scored 29-ball 34 with just one four and a six. It was only Rohit who did the bulk of the attack with 5 fours and 4 sixes.
Once Rohit was dismissed, both Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant failed to capitalise on the momentum India built. Both Hardik and Rishabh scored identical 13-ball 17. Deepak Hooda, who got another chance despite failing in the last match against Pakistan, threw away his wicket for a 4-ball 3. Had it not been for Ashwin’s 7-ball 15, India could have fallen way short of the total. In the end, India ended up with 173/7.
After the match, Rohit Sharma said India were 10-15 runs short and did not capitalise on the knock he played.
“We ended up on the wrong side, just as simple as that. The kind of runs we got, we could have capitalised a bit more. We were 10-15 runs short. The guys out in the middle need to learn what they need to do and what kind of shot-making can happen. It was a good effort with the ball, considering the start they got. The spinners came out and bowled quite aggressively. In the end, SL held their nerves quite well,” Rohit Sharma said after the match.
