Middle-Order
The middle-order has been dismal for India. Shreyas Iyer & Venkatesh Iyer failed to deliver against Proteas. India is highly reliant on top 3 and struggles badly once the top order perishes quickly. This problem has continued to haunt India over the past few years. The problem needs to be addressed quickly in the built-up to the 2023 World Cup. Shreyas Iyer, in particular, had impressed as No.4 but he couldn’t perform against South Africa.
Bowling dept impotency
With Mohd Shami rested for the ODI series, India failed to provide a backup partner to Jasprit Bumrah. Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Shardul Thakur failed to play the role of 2nd & 3rd seamer. While Bhuvneshwar returned wicketless, Shardul managed just a single wicket in two outings.
“We are always looking to improve, I do not think there is much concern about Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s form,” Rishabh Pant spoke of wicketless Bhuvneshwar Kumar in a post-match press conference.
Yuzvendra Chahal & R Ashwin looked off-colour. The duo could manage a single wicket in the first & second ODI. The duo leaked 106 & 115 runs in both ODIs with just 1 wicket in each game.
Lethargic On-field attitude
Besides batting & bowling downfall, India’s overall on-field body language is dismal. While KL Rahul has failed to take key decisions, Virat Kohli’s new role as a senior pro has reined himself in. The players looked uninterested and unprepared for challenges. While the Bavuma-Dussen partnership hurt India in the opener, Quinton De Kock & Janneman Malan partnership added fuel to the fire. India looked as if they are yet to recover from the T20 World Cup onslaught & Test series loss after-effects.
