Chasing a target of 250 in 40 overs was not going to be easy on a pitch that was turning. But India had already given South Africa an edge with some poor fielding and dropped catches. Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill made it even more difficult as they departed in quick succession, reducing India to 8/2.

India SouthAfrica 1st ODI Highlights: While Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan launched a fightback with a 40-run stand, India once again lost quick wickets. Their cautious approach also didn’t help India in a big chase. Kishan scored 37-ball 20 while Gaikwad managed 19 off 42 balls. Both seemed like playing to keep their places in the Playing XI.
However, T20 World Cup reserve Shreyas Iyer gave a timely reminder to the selectors with a brilliant 37-ball 50 to take the attack to South Africa. His 67-run stand off 54 balls with Sanju Samson kept India in the game. While he gave away his wicket off a Lungi Ngidi delivery, Shardul Thakur and Sanju Samson took charge.

Although Samson initially struggled, he found his rhythm. India took a particular liking of Tabraiz Shamsi, hammering him for 89 runs in 8 overs. In the middle-overs, Samson and Shardul kept the asking rate in check with a brilliant 93-run stand off just 66 balls. Shardul smashed 33 off 31.
However, with Shardul departing in the 38th over, India’s hopes faded away quickly. Kuldeep Yadav and Avesh Khan were dismissed in the 19th over as Samson did not get a strike. That ended India’s hopes literally as the hosts needed 30 runs off the last over.
While Samson tried his best with one six and three fours, it did not help the cause. Samson remained unbeaten on 86 off 63 balls. He smashed 9 boundaries and three sixes. But India failed to cross the hurdle, managing just 240/8.

Earlier, sent to bat, South Africa were off to a slow start. Indian pace attack made Quinton De Kock and Janneman Malan toil hard. But once the partnership was broken by Shardul Thakur in the 13th over, South Africa lost quick wickets. Temba Bavuma departed soon off a terrific Shardul Thakur delivery.
Soon, Kuldeep Yadav cleaned up Aiden Markram with a brilliant turning leg-spin, identical to the one he bowled to Babar Azam in the 2019 World Cup. With Quinton De Kock departing for 48, India were in control. But that is where India’s dominance ended.
Absolute Beaut! 🙌 🙌@imkuldeep18 gets Aiden Markram out with a ripper! 👍 👍 #TeamIndia

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, who have taken a particular liking of Indian conditions took charge. Some poor fielding and three dropped catches didn’t help India’s cause either. From 92/3 in 20 overs, South Africa scored 157 in the last 20.
Klaasen and Miller added 139 runs off 106 deliveries to plunder Indian bowling attack. Ravi Bishnoi did not impress as he went for 69 in his 8 overs. Mohammed Siraj went for 49 while Avesh Khan went for 51.
Klaasen hammered an unbeaten 74 off 65 deliveries laced with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Miller for his part, smashed his first 50 against India in ODIs, remaining unbeaten on 75 off 63 deliveries. His knock included five fours and 3 sixes as South Africa posted 249/4.
