India’s hero of Day 3 was Rishabh Pant who single-handedly rescued India with a fantastic century. His unbeaten 100 was the only highlight as India set just 212-run target for South Africa in the 3rd Test at Newlands, Cape Town.

After the Jasprit Bumrah show on Day 2, India needed to set a big target for South Africa. But India were off to the worst possible start on Day 3 with Cheteshwar Pujara departing on the second ball of the day. Ajinkya Rahane soon followed him back. But Rishabh Pant brought his magic bat as he rescued India with an unbeaten hundred as India set 212 target for South Africa.

Pant’s (100 not out off 139 balls) fourth Test hundred constituted for more than 50 per cent of India’s shoddy second innings total of 198 with Kohli’s 29 off 143 balls being the second highest individual score.

With eight batters failing to reach even double figures, no amount of excuses would be enough for India when they analyse the below par show along with the new team management’s decision to carry over-the-hill out of form seniors, which only compounded problems. It’s up to the bowlers now. This was the first Test match in 145-year-history where all 20 batters of one team were caught.

India players celebrate the dismissal of Aiden Markram, South Africa vs India, 3rd Test, Cape Town, 3rd day, January 13, 2022

Chasing a target of 212, South Africa were dealt a blow when Mohammed Shami removed Aiden Markram within the first eight overs. However, Keegan Petersen and Dean Elgar once again carried the innings forward.

The duo stitched together a brilliant 78-run partnership for the second-wicket to frustrate India. In between a DRS decision went against India. After Dean Elgar was given out, he took the DRS and against all cricketing logic, the ball seemed to miss the stumps off an Ashwin delivery. Disgruntled Kohli lashed out and was caught on the stump mic.

But Jasprit Bumrah finally managed to send the big man Elgar back to bring the curtains to Day 3. The other danger man Keegan Petersen is still on the crease, unbeaten on 48. Elgar’s wicket raised faint hopes for India going into Day 4.
