Newlands is the venue where Virat Kohli last captained India in any format of the game and the Kohli the batsman will now return to the ground on Sunday hoping tolet his bat do the talking. The Indian maestro got a fifty in the first ODI before being dismissed for a duck in the second and he will be keen to get amongst the runs once again and end his century drought.

  • Virat Kohli’s century drought in all forms of cricket continues. He had last brought a century in West Indies on August 14, 2019.
  • He scored a crucial fifty in the first ODI but failed to perform in the do-or-die game with India conceding the series after back to back losses.
  • The pressure of captaincy had burdened Kohli for the past few years but the string of failures seem to continue for him.
  • Kohli had smashed 3 centuries during his last visit to SA in the ODI series three years ago but he has failed to replicate his heroics.
  • With just a game in the ODI series, questions could now be raised on his batting after captaincy. However, he ranks ahead of all players in the current setup across formats.

Kohli scored his last ODI hundred in August 2019, his longest drought in the format where he averages nearly 60 with the bat. Overall he has 70 Hundreds, but the wait for an elusive 71st has gone on for more than two years. Kohli came close to breaking the jinx when he last came to Cape Town, scoring a patient 79 in the first innings of the IND vs SA 3rd Test.

His last ODI visit at the venue came back in 2018, where he scored an unbeaten 160 to help India to a commanding 124-run win. The South African attack boasted of the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo and Imran Tahir, but Kohli swatted them all away in a classy knock built on his running between the wickets.
