Earlier, the new year didn’t start well for India Test skipper Virat Kohli who was ruled out of the 2nd Test with an upper back spasm. On Test captaincy debut, KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first in Johannesburg.
At Stumps, South Africa scorecard read 35/1 with Dean Elgar (11*) and Keegan Petersen (14*) at the crease. It was an enthralling day of Test cricket as 11 wickets fell on Day One of the second Test. After bundling India out for 202 in the first innings, South Africa got off to a bad start as they lost opening batter Aiden Markram in the fourth over.

Day 1 Highlights: Mohammed Shami trapped Markram in front of stumps to give India a breakthrough. But Elgar and Petersen ensured the hosts didn’t suffer any more hiccups as South Africa ended the day with nine wickets in hand.

In the second session, South African pacers had tightened screws against the visitors to leave them tottering at 146 for 5 till Tea. The hosts’ bowlers kept up the pressure as they dismissed KL Rahul and Hanuma Vihari post Tea.
Ravichandran Ashwin played a fighting knock of 46 runs in just 50 balls before India were bowled out for 202 in the first innings.

In the first session, a disciplined bowling performance from South Africa kept India at bay as the visitors lost three wickets in the morning.
Earlier in the day, the second Test match started with the biggest surprise when Rahul walked in for the toss instead of Virat Kohli as the Indian Test captain did not take the field due to upper back spasm.

India first innings summary:
India were off to a steady start with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. However, Mayank Agarwal was stunned by a short delivery of Marco Jansen. After his departure, the scoring rate dipped with KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara trying to rebuild slowly. However, Pujara’s poor run continued as he gave away a thick edge off a Duanne Olivier short ball.
Ajinkya Rahane, another batsman out of form, lasted just one ball as he tried to drive a ball that was going wide. The two quick wickets put India on the backfoot leaving the visitors to climb a mountain at 53/3.

The second session was no different as India kept on losing wickets despite a small partnership. KL Rahul slammed a fifty. Once Hanuma fell, Rishabh Pant and Rahul accelerated the scoring. But wickets kept falling in regular intervals. Rishabh Pant (17), Shardul Thakur (0) both disappointed and it was only for R Ashwin that India scored some quick runs. With the help of a short cameo from Jasprit Bumrah, India reached 200 before being dismissed for 202.

- Lunch: India on backfoot after losing Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession. KL Rahul and Hanuma Vihari will have to play a big knock to rescue the team.

- DRS! Short ball from Olivier and the ball touches KL on the shoulder and goes to the keeper. The umpire gives not out but Dean Elgar takes DRS and it is not out.
- Big shout but KL Rahul survives. The bat clutched his pad and there was a big shout for caught behind from Olivier. But the umpire was not interested and Dean Elgar didn’t take the DRS.
- FOUR! Another cover drive and another four for Mayank, this time off Kagiso Rabada.
- FOUR! Straight drive and four. A full toss delivery and Mayank makes no mistake.
- FOUR! Mayank Agarwal welcomes him with a fantastic cover drive for a 4.

As for the Playing XI, Hanuma Vihari replaced Virat Kohli while Duanne Olivier replaced Wiaan Mulder while Kyle Verreynne replaced Quinton de Kock in South Africa line-up. Jasprit Bumrah is India’s vice-captain for the match.
Shreyas Iyer was also ruled out of the match with a stomach bug, giving Hanuma Vihari a lifeline in Tests. He has been warming the bench for long.
