India vs SouthAfrica Highlights: Chasing a target of 107 may look an easy task but it wasn’t on green Greenfield pitch. It swang in and with bounce and extra bounce to give batters the vibe of a Test match. Understandably so, there was no attacking approach from Indian openers. KL Rahul went at less than 80 strike rate. The more aggressive one Rohit Sharma departed in the third over as India scored their lowest in the powerplay with 17/1.
Virat Kohli did struggle as well and before he could make it work, he nicked an Anrich Nortje delivery. But with Suryakumar Yadav joining KL Rahul, things changed quickly. KL Rahul admitted that it was one of the most difficult pitches to bat on.
“Definitely, it was one of the toughest pitches. We have played in some difficult conditions like this but I haven’t got runs, so this was hard work. We have seen how balls were flying, nipping around, two-paced and everything that can be hard for a batter that was the wicket today. We did practice here yesterday and that was a humbling experience as well. We all came in prepared mentally as it was not going to be an easy wicket and I was ready to do the dirty work, ready to be challenged and get the job done for the team,” KL Rahul said.
That Winning Feeling! 👏 👏 #TeamIndia begin the T20I series with a superb win in Thiruvananthapuram. 🙌 🙌

KL Rahul’s strike rate proved it was a hard work to stay on the pitch. Although South African bowlers did not really challenge Indian batters with inswingers or outswingers, the bounce did its trick. Rahul was hit on the chest, on pads thrice, on the hand twice and on the elbow once as he faced 56 balls to score 51. It was his slowest 50 in T20 format. KL Rahul although smashed two 4s and four 6s, he had 33 dot balls out of 56.

However, for Suryakumar Yadav, it never looked like a difficult wicket to bat on. After he was hit on the hand off the first delivery of Anrich Nortje, he fought back with a six. SKY was determined to take the attack to the Protean bowlers no matter what. He continued to go at over 150 strike rate, hammering 33-ball 50 laced with three sixes and five fours. The two stitched together an unbeaten 93-run stand to take India to the finish line with 3.2 overs to spare.
“It was unbelievable for Surya to come out there and play those shots. We have seen how balls were flying, nipping around, two-paced and everything that can be hard for a batter that was the wicket today. For Surya to come with that approach after the first ball that hit him, he just woke up and wanted to play his shots. He wanted to be aggressive and take on the bowling. That helped me take my time and play one end,” KL Rahl said after the match.
Hit it like SKY! 👌👌

Earlier, opting to bowl, India got off to a flying start as Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh rocked South Africa’s top order. Chahar got the ball rolling for India with the wicket of the Proteas captain Temba Bavuma in the final ball of the opening over.

In the very next over it did not take long for Arshdeep to send Quinton de Kock and David Miller packing for 1 and 0 respectively. At this point, South Africa was struggling to find a place on the Indian bowler as they were tottering at 8-4.
Chahar delivered another blow to the Proteas’ top order as he dismissed Tristan Stubbs, who was caught by Arshdeep Singh. This was the third golden duck in the space of five balls. Wayne Parnell then came out to bat.
Arshdeep took 3 wickets in an over and Chahar struck twice as South Africa was five down in powerplay. Aiden Markram looked in great form but could not do much as he was sent packing by Harshal Patel after scoring 25 runs in 24 balls.
Markram helped South Africa build a bit with 25, his dismissal left Proteas tottering at 42-6 after 10 overs. Keshav Maharaj then tried to form a much-needed partnership with Wayne Parnell.

Parnell then tried to play a big shot but handed an easy catch to Suryakumar Yadav on the delivery of Axar Patel. Parnell went back to the pavilion after scoring 24 runs in 37 balls.
In the second last over, Keshav Maharaj smashed 17 runs in the spell of Ashdeep. Maharaj’s fighting 41 kept a small hope alive for South Africa, however, he failed to continue his form in the last over as he was bowled out by Harshal Patel after scoring 41 runs in 35 balls. In the last over Patel bounded Proteas batters, never letting them score any run and restricted them to a total of 106/8.
