IND vs NZ Live: Shreyas Iyer special show – Iyer becomes first Indian to score century and half-century on debut Test

Shreyas Iyer – who got his debut cap from idol Sunil Gavaskar – scored a ton in the first innings of the Kanpur Test to join the elite list of Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and others. And, followed it with a fifty to become the 1st Indian batter to score a ton and a fifty on debut in Test.

Interestingly, Sunil Gavaskar – who handed Iyer the debut cap – was the last Indian batsman to get 50+ scores in both innings on debut.

Shreyas scored 105 in the first innings to guide India to a good total of 345 and came to the rescue in the 2nd innings also. With 14/1 on Day 3, India needed to score big on Day 4 to take command and post a good target but the Kiwi bowlers pushed India on backfoot as India’s score read 51/5.

Iyer then stitched a half-century partnership with Ashwin and brought up another 50 run-stand with Saha to steady India’s innings. The right-handed batsman scored 65 in the second innings and departed just before the tea break.

At the tea break, India’s score read 167/7 with the hosts extending their lead to 216. Wriddhiman Saha (22*) is currently unbeaten at the crease.

Most runs on debut Test (India): With a tally of 170 runs, Shreyas Iyer is the third Indian to score the most runs on debut. Shikhar Dhawan who scored a ton on debut against Australia in Mohali is still at top of the list followed by Rohit Sharma.

  • 187 Shikhar Dhawan v Aus Mohali 2012/13
  • 177 Rohit Sharma v WI Kolkata 2013/14
  • 170 Shreyas Iyer v NZ Kanpur 2021/22
  • 156 Lala Amarnath v Eng Mumbai Gym 1933/34

However, with regular skipper Virat Kohli returning for the second Test in Wankhede Stadium, it has to be seen who will make way for him. The second Test between India and New Zealand will be played in Mumbai from December 03.
