Shreyas Iyer’s father Santosh Iyer also was proud watching his son in India whites for the first time. Iyer had been called up to the India squad back in 2017, but it was a four year wait for the Mumbai star to make his Test debut. Santosh Iyer said, “I’ve Shreyas’ DP on WhatsApp of him holding the BG Trophy in 2017. I haven’t changed the DP since then because I always wanted to remind that playing Test cricket should be his ultimate goal. I’m thrilled it’s finally happening”.

Meanwhile, India won the toss and opted to bat against New Zealand in the first Test of the two-match series here at the Green Park Stadium. In the first Test, Ajinkya Rahane will be leading the side in regular skipper Virat Kohli’s absence and with Rahul now missing, it will be all about Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara rising to the challenge in the middle-order.
Iyer is most likely to slot in at No.5, with Rahane set to move to No.4 in the absence of skipper Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer had his fair share of fortune in getting the cap, with KL Rahul’s injury opening up a spot for him in the Plying XI. However, the Mumbai batsman will now hope to make his mark and keep challenging for a spot, with a fine performance on debut.
