With seniors rested, the series will feature a lot of youngsters. Veteran batter Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead India. Rishabh Pant will be his deputy. It will also mark the return of Deepak Chahar. The pacer missed the T20 World Cup with a back problem. The Indian squad touch down in Auckland on Wednesday and headed straight for practice.
Many in the Indian team have points to prove with Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur in particular, having missed out on the T20 World Cup. The duo are among regulars in the ODI set-up, but only a solitary spot in the playing XI is up for grabs. The rise of Arshdeep Singh will see him make his ODI debut, while a case could be made for Umran Malik.

As per sports journalist Vimal Kumar, Deepak Chahar had an extended session with the bat, while Washington Sundar and Sanju Samson also spent some considerable time facing the local net bowlers. The support staff also pitched in with throwdowns in a rather comprehensive session with Sanju particularly working on facing the short ball. Shikhar Dhawan also had a good time at the nets on the eve of the match.
The Jammu Express did not feature in both T20Is and with the three ICC tournaments coming up in the next three years, Umran could be groomed into an asset, a risk Hardik did not want to take in the T20Is. Dhawan, however, could give him an opportunity in either of the three ODIs.

Sanju Samson had to warm the bench in the T20I series with the team management backing an out-of-form Rishabh Pant. However, the left-hander has had a stellar 2022 in the 50-over format, with his last innings being a stunning 125 not out vs England. Sanju himself has impressed in ODIs this year, but faces stiff competition for a place in the side.
Kuldeep Yadav will also be looking for an opportunity, with Yuzvendra Chahal having featured in both T20Is. Kuldeep made a comeback to the side following a superb season with the Delhi Capitals, but injuries have halted his return and the left-arm chinaman has often found himself on the bench.
