In the first session of Day 3 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, the 33-year-old dismissed Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara to reduce India to 115 for 2 in 35.5 overs.

England’s Jim Laker, the first bowler to take 10 wickets in an innings in 1956, had scalped 17 back-to-back wickets in the match. Anil Kumble – the second bowler to achieve the elusive feat – had managed to take 11 back-to-back wickets in 1999.

Rachin Ravindra took the third Indian wicket and broke the chain for Ajaz Patel, however the tweaker struck again in the 62nd over and dismissed Shreyas Iyer after beating him on the previous delivery.

Patel’s figure of 10 for 119 in 47.5 overs saw New Zealand bowl out India for 325 in the first innings. Talking about his feelings, Ajaz Patel said that the stars aligned in his favour to help him achieve the feat in Mumbai – the city of his birth.

“Quite a special occasion for me and not just me but my family. Unfortunately for me, they’re not here because of COVID. Honestly, it’s surreal and to be able to do that in my career is pretty special. The stars have aligned for me to do it in Mumbai,” Ajaz told host broadcaster Star Sports on Saturday.

“I’m in very illustrious company with Kumble sir as well. Obviously, not a great start for us, but we have a few boys in the shed and put on some runs,” he added.

The Kiwi cricketer now also holds the record for the best bowling figures by a visiting spinner in a Test match in India. He bettered the match figures of Australians Steve O’Keefe and Jason Krejza

He ended with match figures of 14/222 in 73.5 overs to go past Daniel Vettori and occupy the second spot in the list of New Zealand bowlers with most wickets in a Test match. Vettori had taken 12 wickets against Australia and Bangladesh. Legendary Richard Hadlee took as many as 15 wickets against Australia in 1985.

Also, Ajaz Patel now hold the record for most wickets by a bowler against India. Earlier Ian Botham held the record with 13 wickets in Mumbai in 1980.
