Rishabh Pant’s T20I career has never taken off since his debut in 2017 and 21 innings into 2022 suggest that it is time to move on from the maverick left-hander. Shuffled up and down the order for the entire year, Pant was handed the opportunity to all but make his post permanent at the top of the order vs NewZealand.
The Indian vice-captain for the series however failed to make his chance count, registering scores of 6 and 11. Pant struggled to gauge the pace and bounce early in the innings, falling cheaply when the onus was on him to lead from the front. Opening the batting was believed to be a solution to the 25-year-old’s problems in the shortest format, but there still seems to be chinks in his armour.

Given India’s depth in quality, it is unlikely that Pant gets another opportunity with T20s far and few over the next year. Sanju Samson is the prime candidate to replace the 25-year-old, having impressed on his return to the side this year. The Kerala born batsman is versatile and can jump up and down the order, while also offers attacking threat against pace and spin.
