INDIA ENGLAND Edgbaston TEST LIVE: Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant put India in command with fine half-centuries but England pulled off a fine comeback to restrict India’s lead to just 377. India lost their last six wickets for 55 runs but still managed to post a record target for the hosts to chase down.
As has been the case since Brendon McCullum’s takeover, England came out all guns blazing with Alex Lees and Zak Crawley making the most of the conditions on offer. The Indian pacers erred in their length and the English pounced on it, scoring at nearly 5 runs an over. The duo put on a century stand in just over 20 overs, putting India right on the backfoot.
Jasprit Bumrah however brought India back into the contest with a quick double strike, sending back Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope in quick succession. Amidst the chaos, Alex Lees also lost his wicket to a shambolic run-out, having scored a fine half-century.
Following that however, it was the Joe Root-Jonny Bairstow show as the duo almost batted India out of the contest. In the form of their lives, the duo hit Bumrah and Co to all parts of the ground in a brutal assault. Mohammed Siraj particularly struggled, posting ODI-like figures at Stumps on Day 4.

Both Root and Bairstow scored at a fair clip and reached their respective half-centuries in a stunning partnership. They eventually put on 150 for the 4th wicket as Stumps were called at Edgbaston. England need a further 119 on the final day to win with seven wickets in hand.
Should England win, it will be the highest ever chase at Edgbaston and also their highest chase in test history. England’s previous best was 359 against Australia in Headingley. A win will also make the hosts the only second team to successfully chase down a 300+ target in the fourth innings against India.

Highest Test run chase at Edgbaston Birmingham

- Out of these 12 only two times teams have chased 200+ targets successfully.
- England’s highest successful chase record is 359 against Australia at Leeds.
- Hence, England will need to pull off a record 378-run chase.
