It is a big call from Kirmani. Kohli, like many of the top Indian cricketers, rarely get involved in the domestic scene. With a busy schedule at the international level, they are not seen in the domestic action.

“Obviously, there is so much of competition in this current era. If you are not performing in a few innings, irrespective of however experienced you might be, the selection committee takes a call and says, ‘That’s it. Go back to domestic cricket, come back to form and then we will see if we can fit you back into the Indian team’. Don’t see why that can’t apply to Virat Kohli,” Kirmani told India Today.

Kirmani is not the first former player to have questioned Kohli being handed a long rope. Kapil Dev and Venkatesh Prasad have also voiced on the matter, stating that the player can be dropped from the squad. With the kind of competition that exists for the Indian team, there is a growing pressure on Kohli.

The player has been out of form in all formats. Virat Kohli has not scored a hundred since his last Test century in November 2019 against Bangladesh. His last ODI ton came against West Indies in August 2019.

With the T20 World Cup being the next big event for India in a few months time, time is a big factor. Kohli needs to get his A game going else he might miss the bus to Australia. The player also missed India vs England in the first ODI at Oval on Tuesday due to injury. It would be interesting to see if the player plays the second and third ODI. The selectors will be in a tough spot if the player fails once again.
