IND vs ENG: KL Rahul shuts opening door on good friend Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw & Shubman Gill: Not a noteworthy name in Tests just some time ago, KL Rahul has garnered undivided attention as a Test opener, especially after his scintillating century at Lord’s. Following his performance in the first Test where Rahul amassed 110 runs backed with a hundred at the ‘Mecca of Cricket,’ the right-handed batsman has closed the avenues for teammates- Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw & Shubman Gill at least as an opener.

After returning to the whites after nearly two years, Rahul has shown a different guise of his own. His metamorphosis has been so stark that he has stood tall in English conditions, something that had stigmatized Indian batsmen for long. Rahul has made a roaring comeback after being dropped from the test team in 2019 after failing on the West Indies tour.

IND vs ENG: How did KL Rahul get a chance in the England Test series?

KL Rahul’s opportunity in the ongoing Test series against England is no less than a blessing in disguise. After Test opener Shubman Gill suffered a stress fracture in the shin (leg), he had to return home and thus miss the red ball series against the Three Lions. This opened gates for KL Rahul then who was being considered as an opener for India then.

Rahul’s luck became a coin with two-sided heads just when Mayank Agarwal suffered a concussion (head injury) on the penultimate day of the first Test at Trent Bridge. The opportunity was well grabbed by Rahul who gave a promising batting performance for India in the series so far.

When did Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw fall in dry pits?

India’s young opener Prithvi Shaw had a fine start to his Test career after returning with an average of 118.50 against West Indies overseas (2019). He was dropped from the Indian side as he gathered just 4 in the two innings he played for at the Adelaide Test against Australia. His drop from the team saw the incoming of Shubman Gill who fairly consolidated the opening position then.

As for Agarwal, he was dropped from the Indian Test side following his batting mire in Australia. The right-handed batsman failed miserably where in the 6 outings, Agarwal returned with an average of just 13.00.

Now as the situation stands- KL Rahul has sealed the entry doors for the trio- Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw & Shubman Gill after his significant batting performance against the Three Lions in the ongoing Test series.

The 29-year old is currently averaging 41.38 on England soil with still three matches to get underway.
