IND vs BAN: Rough patch for Shikhar Dhawan continued in Dhaka on Sunday. The Indian opener squandered yet another golden opportunity to cement his place in the India squad for the 2023 World Cup. The southpaw got out for 7 runs off 17 balls in the ongoing 1st ODI against Bangladesh. With now only 19 ODIs left before the 50-over World Cup, Dhawan’s spot is under the scanner. Worst, with Rohit Sharma already fixed as one opener, and Rishabh Pant’s injury, Ishan Kishan is likely to replace Dhawan in the next match on December 7. Mehidy Hasan Miraz clean-bowled Shikhar Dhawan after the hosts invited India to bat first. It was a pretty needless effort from Shikhar Dhawan.
As Mehidy Hasan Miraz troubled him last over and kept the pressure on. So opener tried the reverse sweep, but he missed and it hit him on the chest, unfortunately, hit the hand as well and went back onto the stumps. Bangladeshi bowler got his reward for some tight bowling.
IND vs BAN: Pressure building up on Shikhar Dhawan’s slow strike rate becoming a cause of concern – 79, 29, 61, 10, 31*, 9, 1, 97, 13, 58, 81*, 33, 40, 4, 13, 8, 72, 3, 28, and 7 are the scores Dhawan has registered in the 20 ODIs he has played in 2022. The southpaw has failed to score a century in this period and is scoring runs at a dismal-looking strike rate of 74.47.
In the three ODIs against New Zealand, the opener finished with 103 runs at an average of 34. His strike rate of 78.03 is the worst for the top five run scorers in the ODI series. It is his way of scoring runs that has become a big issue. With India adopting an aggressive brand of playing cricket, the veteran may not be fit for the 50-over World Cup.
Now with Rishabh Pant’s injury who has been ruled out of the ODI series, KL Rahul is donning the keeper gloves. But with injuries in mind which come with wicketkeeping, the team management will not take the chance to continue with Rahul. Instead, they will go with Ishan Kishan who is a recognised wicketkeeper in the Men in Blue’ squad.
