IND vs BAN: On Sunday, the first game of the three-match ODI series will take place between Bangladesh and India in Dhaka. The first two matches of the all-important 50-over series will be played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. The crowd in Dhaka can be ‘intimidating’ and both Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik are warry about this fact. Unlike other tours where India get huge backing even in away conditions, Bangladesh is one of those few trips where the crowd plays a major factor against the Men in Blue. The ODI series opener on December 4 will kick off India’s tour. The first game will take place at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The second game will also take place at same venue on December 7. The two nations will play their final one-day international at Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on December 10.

India suffered their first-ever ODI series loss to Bangladesh in the last bilateral series between the nations in 2015 by 2-1. The two sides were drawn in the lone Test. Before the game was ruined by rain, India had the advantage.

Talking about crowd factor in Bangladesh, Dinesh Karthik told Cricbuzz: “I think the Bangladesh fans are the strength of the Bangladesh cricket team and I say that because even in a country like Australia where we just played the World Cup, there were big numbers of people turning out for a Bangladesh games. Sometimes for the host nation, the crowd was less but for the Bangladesh games it went full.”

“They, like India, are under enormous pressure when they go to ICC tournaments as well.. to play to a certain level and it is fabulous to see. I think it is fair to say that the Asian fans make up a large chunk of cricket followers around the world itself and Bangladesh are very strong and vociferous when it comes to how much they support their Bangladesh team. Not many games when India play there is a 50-50 or 60-40 towards India but, the Bangladesh game [in WC] was one such game where you did find a lot of Bangladesh supporters,” the Indian wicketkeeper-batter added.

India captain Rohit Sharma called Bangladesh’s home crowd at Dhaka quite intimidating ahead of their first ODI match of the series.

“Very much, yes (whether India will be under some pressure from the crowd). The crowd here can be intimidating. There is no doubt. They are very passionate fans of cricket and they get right behind the team. Which is pretty exciting for the team. For us, a lot of the guys are coming to Bangladesh for the first time,” Rohit Sharma said in the pre-match press conference.

“But that doesn’t change a thing. We are used to playing in such big crowds, especially when you tour places like England and Australia, the crowd there can also be quite intimidating and they want to make sure that their team wins. They want to get behind their team. It’s the same thing here as well. But I think it’s not going to affect our boys too much. I think they are used to being under pressure, being in front of a lot of people, and being challenged. So, I don’t think that’s going to make much of a difference,” he further added.
