Chasing a target of 272, India were off to the worst possible start. Virat Kohli who got the promotion to open with Rohit injured and KL Rahul tired, departed in the 2nd over. Shikhar Dhawan followed suit soon. He was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman in the third over for just 8.
Washington Sundar for the first time in his career, got the opportunity to bat at number 4 in ODIs. He looked good for some time against accurate Bangladesh bowling, but managed to survive for 19 balls. He contributed 11 runs, and departed the scene in the 10th over, with India’s scoreboard displaying 39/3.
In-came KL Rahul, India’s hero with the bat in the 1st ODI. The wicket-keeper batsman also struggled to get his timing right both off the pacers and the spinners. He faced 28 balls and could contribute only 14. India was more than in a spot of bother when the Karnataka lad departed in the 19th over with just 65 runs on the board.
India was desperate for a partnership, and finally got one in the form of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel. The duo added 105 runs for the 5th wicket. Iyer looked in sublime touch, and was the standout batsman on the night for the Blues. He made 82 runs and was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan, who could do no wrong in the game. Axar Patel, who contributed 56 in as many balls, was dismissed by pacer Ebadot Hossain in the 39th over.
Axar’s wicket opened the floodgates for hungry and motivated Bangladesh attack, who squeezed the runs from all corners, to ensure that the asking rate only went up, forcing the Indian batsmen to take risk.
India lost all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar in quick successions that forced skipper Rohit Sharma to make way into the middle. Despite battling pain on his injured left thumb, Rohit took the attack to the Bangladesh bowlers. He fought fire with fire and notched up a fighting hundred in dire circumstances.
The Indian skipper smashed 51 runs in 28 balls, an innings laced with five sixes and three boundaries, to keep India in the hunt. Unfortunately, India lost the match by 5 runs, and with it the series 2-0, with one match remaining.
Apart from Miraz, Mahmudullah scored 71 while a 10-ball 18-run cameo from Nasum helped Bangladesh dismantle Indian bowling. Bangladesh have to thank a record 147-run 7th wicket stand between Miraz and Mahumuddlah for that. Bangladesh bounced back from 69/6 to 271/7. Washington Sundar was India’s best bowler with 3/37. This was India’s second straight ODI series defeat in Bangladesh. MS Dhoni-led India lost in 2015.
Earlier, Litton Das won the toss and opted to bat in the 2nd ODI. Bangladesh have brought in Nasum Ahmed in place of Hasan Mahmud. For India, Axar Patel and Umran Malik are back while Kuldeep Sen and Shahbaz Ahmed stay out.
Rohit Sharma Injury Update: The BCCI has now released a statement on Twitter confirming the injury, with the update that he has been sent for medical scans. “India Captain Rohit Sharma suffered a blow to his thumb while fielding in the 2nd ODI. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He has now gone for scans.”
