Officials are optimistic that Handscomb will be able to travel to India later this month with the Australian squad.
Australia’s camp is already dealing with other injuries as both Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc are currently nursing their injured figures.
Green is optimistic that he will play in the opening match of the series while Starc will miss the first Test in Nagpur on February 9 and travel to India later.
The best chance for Handscomb to be called up for a Test is probably if he is declared fit for the opening game and Green is unable to recuperate in time. Fact that Handscomb bats right-handed and could break up the string of left-handers in the middle order works in his favour.
