Interesting treatment of the pitch in Nagpur. The groundstaff watered the entire centre of the surface & only the length areas outside the left-hander’s leg stump & then rolled only the centre, stopping short every time they got to the good length areas at both ends #IndvAus pic.twitter.com/Myr2ZblqCg

“We want to maximise our advantage and prepare turners. Spinners are our biggest strength and we should give them the best conditions to bowl and get wickets,” a source in the team told Indian Express.

IND vs AUS PITCH Report: It’s FINAL, Nagpur PITCH will be a RANK TURNER as India attempts booking place in WTC FINALS: Follow India vs Australia LIVE updates
As per an Indian Express report, the Indian team have asked for a rank turner for the 1st Test starting on February 9. Exponentially turning tracks have been the feature of home Tests over the last few years, and India are sticking to their guns. On Monday, while the pitch was dressed in a green cover, there were brown patches on offer. The grass is likely to be shaved off as Rohit Sharma once again banks on his spinners.
There is sufficient reason to back India’s insistence on playing on spin-friendly conditions. The quartet of Ashwin-Jadeja-Axar-Kuldeep is perhaps the best in the world. The sight of India unleashing the four together on a helpful wicket gives the hosts a huge advantage. India have won 27 of their last 34 home games without losing a series.
IND vs AUS: Why the pitch is of great debate?
- India are keen to flex their home advantage and play on spin-friendly surfaces.
- The Australians have already expressed their displeasure regarding the pitches.
- Steve Smith and Ian Healy have gone on record, with the mind games are work.
- India haven’t budged, and a rank turner awaits in Nagpur for IND vs AUS 1st Test.
- The red-soil surface is expected to turn from Day 1.
- India could very well four of their spinners with a WTC finals spot on the line.
Only two matches have ended in defeat. One of them came against Australia in Pune, but the team views it more as an anomaly. India opted for 10 spinners during their sessions, further hinting at a wicket that turns square from the get-go.
On Nagpur’s red soil pitch, batting is recommended for the first three days unless a ferocious turner appears. While it is no dirt track, given the team’s request, expect the ball to start turning from Day 1 itself. In 2015, all 20 South African wickets were taken by spin in Nagpur. In the most recent Test here, against Sri Lanka in 2017, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja each claimed eight and five wickets, respectively.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri had earlier suggested the use of favourable conditions during the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
“I want the ball to turn from Day 1! If you lose the toss, so be it. You want to see the ball turning a bit. Or something there for the bowlers on offer from Day 1. It’s your strength. You’re playing at home. Capitalise on it,” Shastri said in an interaction with Star Sports.
