IND vs AUS ODI: Team Australia announced on Tuesday that Pat Cummins will not travel to India for the ODI series after missing the final two Tests. Steve Smith will continue to serve as captain for the three-match one-day international series starting later this week. David Warner and Ashton Agar have come back for visitors for the 50-over series after the duo returned to Australia mid-Border Gavaskar Trophy. After the second Test in Delhi, Cummins left the tour to take care of his mother Maria, who passed away from breast cancer last week as the final game was being played in Ahmedabad.

“Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home,” coach Andrew McDonald said on Tuesday. “Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process.”

As a result of leading the Test team in their final two games of the season, Smith will continue to serve as captain.

Since taking up the ODI captaincy after Aaron Finch’s retirement last year, Cummins has only managed the team in two games, both of which were played at home in November against a demoralised England team that had recently won the T20 World Cup.

Given that the forthcoming series will be played in the same nation hosting the ODI World Cup later this year, it assumes further significance.

David Warner and Ashton Agar return

David Warner, who has not been a part of the 50-over group practising in Ahmedabad recently, will make a comeback, according to McDonald. Warner missed the final two Tests due to an elbow fracture.
