After captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s bizarre run out, India once again crumbled under the strain of a knockout game, and the defending champions Australia defeated India by five runs to go to the Women’s T20 World Cup final for the seventh time in a row. Australia was able to post a difficult 172 for four after Meg Lanning decided to bat in the semifinal owing to India’s poor fielding and catching.

India was in trouble at 28 for three and on the verge of losing the match when Harmanpreet (52 off 34) and Jemimah Rodrigues (43 off 24) put up a counterattacking 69-run stand off just 41 balls. With five wickets in hand, India needed a relatively manageable 39 off the final 30 balls, however, as in the past, the squad fell short and finished at 167 for 8. India had previously lost to Australia in the World Cup final and most recently in the CWG final last year.
