Australia had to chase a record 209. They never did that but the World Champions started like one. Promoting Cameron Green to open paid off brilliantly as he ripped India’s attack apart. After Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 8-run first over, Umesh Yadav went for 16. Umesh’s first four deliveries on return to T20s yielded four consecutive boundaries.

While Axar Patel broke the rhythm with Aaron Finch’s wicket, Green partnered Steve Smith for a 40-ball 70-run stand. Australia rushed to 60/1 in the powerplay to make their intent clear. Steve Smith received a reprieve when he was 19. Smith went on to score 35 off 24. Green was dropped twice. First in the 8th over when Axar Patel dropped a dolly when Green was batting on 42. Green went on to score 61 off 30 balls.

But India made a mini comeback after the drinks break with Axar Patel and Umesh Yadav bagging two wickets each. Umesh Yadav was very expensive on return to T20Is after three years, dismissed Steve Smith and soon Glenn Maxwell. Axar Patel removed Josh Inglis as the Aussies lost 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Axar was the best Indian bowler with three wickets for 17 runs. The rest went to the cleaners.

Earlier, sent to bat, India were off to a terrible start. Rohit Sharma (11 off 9) and Virat Kohli (2 off 7) departed within the powerplay, reducing India to 35/2 in 5th over. However, it was KL Rahul who took charge. Often criticised for his sluggish batting, the Indian vice-captain silenced all of them with a fluent 35-ball 55-run knock.

His knock included 4 boundaries and 3 sixes as he added 68 runs with Suryakumar Yadav for the third wicket. While Rahul departed in the 12th over, SKY lit up Mohali sky with some excellent shots. His 25-ball 46 included 2 fours and 4 sixes. But he too departed soon after KL Rahul.

With no Rishabh Pant, it was on Hardik Pandya to take on Australia’s bowling attack and he did so. With all the talks about Dinesh Karthik’s finisher role, Hardik stamped authority on that particular role, hammering 30-ball 71, laced with 7 boundaries and 5 sixes. From 148/5, he took India to 208 with three consecutive sixes off Green in the last three overs.

However, Axar Patel, the batter disappointed with 5-ball 6 and so did Dinesh Karthik. He never looked settled and was trapped leg-before by Nathan Ellis. But Hardik’s heroics and 21 runs off the last over took India to 208/6. For Australia, Nathan Ellis was excellent with 3/30.
