The 29-year-old revamped his game against spin following two underwhelming tours to Pakistan and SriLanka last year. His new mindset and occasional off-spin bowling earned him a spot in playing XI in Delhi Test. Travis Head has revealed he pushed back hard against the selectors’ contested decision to drop him for the Nagpur Test and believes he showed enough in Delhi to indicate his aggressive approach will reap rewards in the remaining two matches.

“It was something that I didn’t expect coming here, The conversations were robust. Everyone has different opinions. I respect the coaching staff and selectors and I have a really strong relationship with them. I think that’s what made the conversations the way they went, because there’s respect that goes both ways and we were able to voice our opinions” said Head.

Speaking about playing in Border Gavaskar Trophy, Head said, “And I woke up the next morning and I’m still on tour playing for Australia, I still get to do what I love to do … I still feel like I’m in a great space. It’s just one week that didn’t go my way.”

When asked about Cummins’ captaincy, Former Australian cricketer Ian Healy said, “I don’t want him [Cummins] carrying the burden of so much captaincy for too long.” Healy backed middle-order batsman Travis Head to lead Australia in the near future and said, “I think Travis Head is quite capable.”

Since his recall at the start of the 2021–22 Ashes, Head had been batting at No. 5 in Australia and had an average of 73.50. In seven innings on the subcontinent last year, he averaged 15.13 and failed to score more than 26. However, his second inning 43 in Delhi was laced with aggressive strokes, putting India’s spinners on the back foot. Now he is expected to be a key component of Australia’s struggling batting lineup for the next Test match in Indore.

Although Head hasn’t been informed whether he will open the rest of the series, it appears sure that selectors will continue with him to open with Usman Khawaja following his success in their low-scoring defeat in Delhi. For the Ashes, a drop back down the order would be likely, though Head insists he can bat anywhere.
