IND vs NZ: Pant fails to live up to the promise of a maverick white-ball player, time running out
- With a solid platform set by Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, all Pant had to do was mix caution with aggression.
- Rather, the wicketkeeper batter batted over cautiously and played 23 balls for 15 runs.
- This has been the problem for Pant for the longest time. Getting his eye in and then throwing it away by playing a loose shot.
- In 10 ODIs in 2022, the 25-year-old has scored 213 managing to score only three fifties.
- While Pant managed to score a superlative 125 against England, consistency is the one thing lacking in the white-ball formats.
- As a opener in the T20 format also the southpaw failed to strike big as he was dismissed for two consecutive single-digit scores in T20Is against New Zealand.
- With Sanju Samson waiting patiently for an opportunity, fans and experts feel Pant’s time is nearing in white-ball cricket.

IND vs NZ: Time for Samson to shine, fans say the RR skipper deserves more chances in white-ball formats
In the limited opportunities that Samson has got, the right-hand batter has grabbed with both hands. In 9 T20Is in 2022 Samson has scored 179 runs, while in the ODI format, the wicketkeeper batter has scored 268 runs in nine matches in 2022. On most of occasions, the RR skipper has finished games for India by displaying a cool and composed demeanor. Experts and fans feel the Kerala batter deserves more chances in white-ball formats.
Former India ll-rounder Reetinder Sodhi feels Pant has become a liability in white-ball formats. The cricket expert believes it is time to move on Pant and give chance to Samson.
“He (Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments,” Sodhi was quoted as saying by India News. “When you give too many chances, problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys.”
“Only time will tell how many opportunities and how long he gets. Time is passing and he really has to tighten his shoes. Everything has a limit. You cannot depend on one player for so long. If he is not performing, you got to show him the exit door,” Sodhi added.
