In an exclusive interview News18CricketNext, Dr Atul Rai, the  interim chairman of USA Cricket from August 2022 to April 2023, claimed that lack of real facilities in USA and improper infrastructure has made the situation tough. With Cricket USA not meeting the necessary standards required to host a massive tournament like the T20 World Cup, the WestIndies could go on to host the tournament.

“It’s a very tough situation,” Dr Atul Rai told News18CricketNext. “Not really. I don’t think so. Not where we stand right now. But then again ICC has to make the final call. But without proper infrastructure, nothing is going to happen. We don’t have any existing facilities so it’s up to the ICC whether they will invest money in some makeshift venue and even host some games. But it’s a very tough situation, to be honest. ICC has recognised that too.”

“They wanted to do something but USA Cricket hasn’t helped themselves. At the end of the day, when our house is not in order and there is so much that needs to happen before anyone can come in and say okay you are doing great, let’s put more money and make things happen. ICC is not happy with the situation here and I don’t blame them. You can only hold a hand so far, right? At some point, you have to learn to walk on your own. Hand holding can only take you so far in life,” he added.

Earlier this year when the ICC meeting was held, the apex cricket governing body of the world as USA Cricket to set things right and clear all internal problems so that they can be in contention to host the games for the upcoming World Cup. Reports have claimed that around 15 games including a big match featuring India vs Pakistan would have been scheduled to take place in the states.

But with no advancements and no real facilities in the United States, ICC has been tempted to re-think on their decision. As of now no official statement has been made by the ICC on this regard.
