ICC T20 World CUP 2022: ENG vs AUS: England stumbled to 86-5 under dense cloud cover, and despite a late burst of boundaries from Moeen Ali, they were still short of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern par when the heavens opened. Ireland’s 157 all out in 19.2 overs was supported by captain Andrew Balbirnie’s 62 off 47 balls for Ireland. The delay was fatal since England, which was on 105-5 when the rain began, lost by five runs using the DLS technique, therefore ruining their chances of making it to the semifinals.

After losing to New Zealand in their opening match, Australia now have a chance to still advance from the six-team group due to England’s setback. Given that a 4-1 record is normally required to be one of the top two teams, it also transforms Friday night’s encounter between the Ashes rivals into a virtual World Cup elimination match. The victory marked Ireland’s first in the T20 World Cup’s Super 12 (or 10 or 8) stage.

Bowlers executed their plans poorly, says Jos Buttler

England skipper Jos Buttler pointed fingers at his bowlers, who he said executed their plans poorly in the first half of Ireland’s innings, with Andrew Balbirnie taking advantage with a 47-ball 62. “I think, especially in the first ten overs with the ball, we were a long way short of the standards we set ourselves,” Buttler said. “We let Ireland get away from us, and I thought we dragged it back well in the second half, but that put a lot of pressure on us.”

Australia vs England

One of the key matches of the group stage was always going to be Australia vs England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. And because Friday’s game is essentially an early elimination, it is now much more important to watch. Both sides are aware that their prospects of qualifying for the playoffs are likely to end with a second loss.

After two games, England would have been expected to be in the first place and have a good NRR considering that their first matches were against the Group 1 countries with the lowest MRF ICC T20I Team Rankings. However, England is now exposed in terms of points and NRR due to the defeat by Ireland and the thin margin of victory over Afghanistan.

Australia’s NRR is lower than England’s due to the shattering nature of their own loss to New Zealand. However, if the tournament hosts put together a winning streak leading up to the semifinals, that might not even be a consideration.
