ICC Cyberattack: ICC Phishing Attack – Cricket’s world governing body too has fallen victim to online fraud. While Rs 203 Cr may not be much for BCCI, it is a big chunk of money for associate nations. Smaller associate nations get around $500,000 to a $1 million (with ODI status). Other associate nations earn around 10 million and it’s a sizeable chunk.

“It can’t be true. An ODI Associate 13-20 ranked can get anything between 500,000 to one million,” an official of an associate nation, in disbelief, told Cricbuzz.

What is Phishing? – Phishing is a form of cybercrime. In this, scamsters target victims over email, telephone or text messages by imitating legitimate institutions or persons. They lure companies or individuals into sharing sensitive information such as personal details, phone numbers, bank details, credit card details and passwords. It results in identity theft or financial losses.

  • Eye-popping offers: Fraudsters offer eye-catching deals to lure victims into sharing sensitive information. Fraudsters offer holiday deals or monetary benefits or lucrative prizes on emails or text messages. The shared links often contain malware that infects computers or phones to record sensitive details without the victim’s knowledge.
  • Social Engineering attacks: At times, fraudsters use databases purchased from Phone or Credit card companies. By using the data, they target victims. The attackers pose as they know the victims up close and use their vulnerable situation.
