Rohit Sharma to be sacked as Test captain?
Many questioned Rohit Sharma’s tactics after India’s humiliating 209-run loss to Australia in the WTC Final and the team’s decision to bench top-ranked Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin. Many reports indicated that BCCI was going to dismiss the senior opener from his position as captain. However, BCCI authorities discredited all claims and rumours, stating that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the squad although there is no guarantee of this given his advanced age.
A senior BCCI official denied any claims that he had been sacked, but added that the governing body will closely monitor his performances during the West Indies tour next month before making a decision.
Speaking to PTI, he said: “There are baseless rumours about Rohit being removed from captaincy. However, whether he will continue as captain for the entire two-year World Test Championship (WTC) cycle is a significant question, considering he will be nearly 38 by the end of the third edition in 2025. At present, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will assess Rohit’s batting form after the two Tests before taking any decision.”
“After the West Indies tour, we have no Test matches until the end of December when the team travels to South Africa. This provides enough time for the selectors to deliberate and make a decision. By then, the fifth selector (new chairman) will have joined the panel, and a decision can be made.”
The next time the India team will be in action is when they tour the West Indies in the months of July and August. In the Caribbean, they will be playing in 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 5 T20Is. The tour will kick off from July 12.
