Revamped Hockey India League returns: Bigger bucks, Stricter rules, No Pakistan

Once franchise contracts are signed, the much-anticipated player auction will commence.

The Hockey India League (HIL) is back with a bang, promising a bigger player purse, stricter franchise regulations, and exciting developments for both fans and players. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

More money for players

The league will offer a larger player purse, enticing a wider pool of talent. Additionally, stricter franchise norms aim to ensure financial stability and long-term success.

Two venues for HIL

For the initial seasons, matches will be held in just two venues – Ranchi and Rourkela. This is likely a cost-saving measure for the new franchises. Interestingly, both men’s and women’s leagues are expected to run concurrently, maximizing fan engagement.

International stars galore (Except Pakistan)

The HIL will feature a star-studded international line-up. Over 500 international players have expressed interest, with the potential for more to join after the Paris Olympics. However, due to a ranking cut-off, Pakistani players will not be participating in the league.

Missed opportunity for Pakistan Hockey?

The decision to exclude players from countries outside the top 15 world ranking has sparked debate. While officials claim it was unintentional, it does prevent Pakistani players from showcasing their talent on this platform.

Nine Pakistani players did participate in the inaugural HIL but were sent back due to political tensions.

Corporates vie for franchise ownership

The HIL has attracted significant interest from potential franchise owners. Companies with experience in major leagues like the IPL and ISL, along with those associated with prominent sports personalities, have expressed their desire to be involved. The official franchise owners will be finalized soon.
