Hockey World Cup 2023: Teams participating in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup have finally started to arrive in Bhubaneshwar. Malaysia, South Africa, Argentina and New Zealand arrived for the tournament on Friday and were given warm welcome. The tournament gets underway from January 16. Belgium are the  defending champions having won the title in 2018. The Red Lions defeated Netherlands in the final to lift the trophy.

Chile had arrived in India on Thursday to take part in their maiden FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup tournament. The South American team were the second foreign team after Netherlands to arrive in the country. Chile have been placed in Group C and will play their matches against Netherlands,  New Zealand and Malaysia.

On Wednesday 3-Time World Champions Netherlands were the 1st team to arrive in India for the upcoming Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneshwar-Rourkela. The Dutch arrived early to get acclimatized to the current weather conditions of the subcontinent. Reigning and defending  Hockey World Cup champions Belgium and Pakistan are expected to arrive soon .

The 2018 edition was also played in India and the Netherlands suffered a disappointing 2-3 loss in the title clash vs Belgium in penalties. Follow FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 LIVE updates on InsideSport.IN 

Netherlands land in India for Hockey World Cup 2023

In the video shared by Hockey India the Dutch were given a warm reception on their arrival at Patnaik International Airport (BPIA). The Netherlands team will now leave for Rourkela on January 10. The world no 3 team will be playing their first two matches at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. The opening match will be against Malaysia followed by New Zealand.

The Silver medalist from the 2018 edition will be led by Brinkman with Jeroen Delmee as their head coach.

Giving an insight on tam’s preparations, Brinkman said  “The last few months in the build-up to the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela have been pretty good for us.The team is completely ready for the tournament. We have just reached India and will have some rest before starting our preparation for the first match”.

“It is amazing to be here again and we are excited to play in front of the hockey fans in the tournament”.

The Three-time winners have been placed in Group C alongside Malaysia, New Zealand and Chile. The current Dutch team has mix of youth and experienced players which will help them challenge for the title this season.

Goalkeepers: Maurits Visser, Pirmin Blaak

Defenders: Lars Balk, Floris Wortelboer, Teun Beins, Jip Janssen, Justen Blok, Derck de Vilder

Midfielders: Jonas de Geus, Seve van Ass, Jorrit Croon, Steijn van Heijningen, Tijmen Reijenga

Strikers: Thijs van Dam, Thierry Brinkman, Terrance Pieters, Tjep Hoedemakers, Koen Bijen

Key points to know about the upcoming Hockey World Cup 2023

  • India will be the first nation to host the men’s Hockey World Cup twice. Odisha had hosted the 2018 edition as well which was won by Belgium.
  • A total number of 16 teams will be taking part in the Hockey World Cup
  • India has been placed in Group D alongside England, Wales and Spain
  • The group stage matches are scheduled for January 13 through January 20, while The crossover matches will take place from January 22 and 23. The quarterfinal matches will be played on January 24 and 25.
  • The matches for the 9th to 16th positions will take place on January 26 and 2. The semifinals will be played on January 27. The Bronze and Gold medal match will take place on January 29.
  • On the opening day the matches will be played in Bhubaneshwar as well as Rourkela. The opening match of the tournament will be played in the Kalinga stadium. In the first encounter 2016 Olympic Gold medalists Argentina will take on reigning African Champions South Africa.
  • World No. 1 Australia will also be taking the field on Day 1 and will face France in their opening match. At the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Teams from Pool D will be action. England will take on Wales in the first match. The final match of the opening day will see hosts India going against Spain in their opening match.
