The women in blue started on the front foot and within three minutes. They breached the Chile defence very soon as Sangita got into the scoresheet. It was from a combined effort from Salima Tite in the D, who fed a pass to Vandhana Katariya, Katariya then gave the ball on a platter for Sangita , who deflected it into the net to give India 1-0 lead.
Within few minutes, the Indian offence yet again rain into the D and Navneet Kaur with some good stick work passed the ball to Sonika in front of the post, who slotted it into the net as they moved into the second quarter with 2-0 lead.
In the second quarter too the possession was largely with the Savita Punia led side. But unlike the first quarter, Chilean defence stepped up, leaving as the Indians were left searching for an opportunity to score a goal. India however earned three penalty corner opportunities but Gurjit Kaur failed to convert all the opportunities as the first half came to an end.

They continued their aggressive style of play but Chile too managed to make inroads in the contest. Towards the end of the quarter, they managed to get a penalty corner opportunity and converted it as Villagran Fernanda pulled one back for Chile as her shot gets deflected off Indian defender Udita’s neck and went into the net.
In the final quarter, Chile enjoyed a much better possession, however the Indians ensured they didn’t concede any other goal as they ended the match with 3-1 victory.
India play Japan in their second pool match on Monday. India had lost to Japan in the 2018 Asian Games final. India play South Africa in their concluding league match on December 14. The knockout matches will be played on December 16 and 17.
