‘Here to change dynamics’, Carles Cuadrat rekindles hopes ahead of ISL

East Bengal head coach Carles Cuadrat reignites fans' excitement for ISL 2023-24, as  Red and Gold aim for top berths in the tenth season of the Indian Super League.

East Bengal has had a rough start to their ISL campaign, finishing 9th, 11th, and 9th in their first three seasons. However, thanks to Carles Cuadrat, East Bengal fans may soon see a stronger performance in the ISL. The Spaniard believes that with the right tweaks and upgrades, East Bengal can become a league superpower. Ahead of ISL 2023-24, the tenth season of the Indian Super League, Cuadrat shared his insight and expectations for the season.

“We’ve been in the ISL for three seasons and things haven’t gone well for the club. We’re here to change the dynamics. We have a lot of supporters and a huge legacy to this club. The supporters are having bad times in the last three seasons. Thus it’s hard work for us to improve the performance and to try to get positive results for the supporters.” stated Cuadrat.

Carles Cuadrat, who arrived in April, has already made significant improvements to the team in his brief tenure. The progress was seen in the recently finished Durand Cup. While East Bengal began the tournament as underdogs, they quickly rose to prominence by defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 in the group round. East Bengal reached the Durand Cup final despite not being the top team throughout the season. However, they were handed a narrow loss against same Mohun Bagan.

“We have to improve in a lot of aspects. Football is a multi-factorial sport. We are just in the starting of a new process, and have only played six official matches. At the end of the season, after more than 25 matches, we’ll see different things. It’s a long process and we’ll need to work on that.”

East Bengal fans have begun to expect a comeback from their team, despite the fact that they already have a runners-up trophy. This time around, the club has brought in some reliable players, with winger Nandha Kumar, midfielder Saul Crespo, and Javi Siverio standing out. After years of turmoil, Cuadrat and his crew have offered East Bengal supporters a ray of optimism. Carles Cuadrat commented on the rising expectations:

“I’m not going to say the positive we’ll finish because we have powerful teams in the league. All the teams have been getting great players, trying to go forward with new projects with new coaches. “

“It’ll be an interesting ISL because we’ll meet a lot of coaches who have been champions in India, be it the champions of the ISL, Federation Cup, Super Cup etc. They already know how to be competitive in that environment. It is great for ISL to have so many champion coaches in the competition.” he concluded!
