Matteo Berrettini had words of praise for Carlos Alcaraz after losing his Wimbledon fourth round clash against the Spaniard. Berrettini gave a good fight but lost the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday, 10th July 2023. Soon after the loss, he went on to compare Alcaraz’s game to that of seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.

“He reminds me of Novak a little bit, this kind of reflex, time of reaction,” he said in the post-match conference. “Like a server I feel this. But I also feel when I found the right rhythm, he didn’t like that. It’s a matter of few things. He was better than me,” he added.

Berrettini had earlier faced Novak Djokovic at the Wimbledon. It was during the final in 2021 in which Berrettini lost 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6. The Italian struggled with injuries this season. He was dealing with an abdominal injury and played just two tournaments since March. His only tournament before Wimbledon was the Stuttgart Open, where he lost in the first round.

As a result of missing tournaments, his results dropped and he went unseeded at the Wimbledon this year. He however made a terrific comeback in the tournament. He began the campaign by a four-set win against compatriot Lorenzo Sonego. He then dominated against 15th seed Alex de Minaur and 19th seed Matteo Berrettini with straight set wins.

Despite his fourth round loss at Wimbledon, he will take lots of confidence from this tournament. Meanwhile, Alcaraz will face fellow 20-year old Holger Rune in the quarterfinal. It will be the first quarterfinal appearance in Wimbledon for both the players.
