Harry Maguire: Harry Maguire acquired the Manchester United armband in 2020. It seems that after leading the team for 3 years, the defender is set to lose his captaincy. His playing time went down significantly in the last season. The matches he did play, he did not only fail to make an impact, but he also made grave mistakes that cost Man United. Bruno Fernandes took his place as the captain in the second half of the last season. Reportedly, Bruno will continue as captain instead of Maguire.

Harry Maguire only started 8 Premier League games in the last season. Moreover, the matches he started, he made many grave mistakes that cost Man United. However, he still managed to keep the armband. The armband went to Bruno Fernandes in his absence. There have been rumours that Manchester United are thinking of offloading Maguire and many clubs have shown interest. As per reports, even if he stays, Bruno is set to replace him as Man United captain from the upcoming season.
Maguire arived at man united back in 2019 from Leicester on a record £85 million transfer fee. Within 6 months, he was named as the club captain following Ashley Young’s exit. After leading the team for 3 years, it’s become conspicuous that Maguire’s form has dropped significantly. He has gone down in the packing order behind Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Raphael Varane. He was called to be featured in the starting XI only 16 times throughout all competitions last season.
His own goal in the Europa League quarter-finals first leg against Sevilla cost Man United a win. They had to be satisfied with a draw in that match. In the second leg, the first goal they conceded was again a result of Maguire’s mistake. These two huge mistakes caused the Red Devils gravely as they were knocked out of the competition from that stage. His unimpressive run cost him his place at the starting XI. It also might have become the reason he now has to leave the club.

There were rumours that Manchester United were ready to sell Maguire. Apparently, he wants to leave as well. A major reason being, he will lose his place in the national team as well if he does not get a decent amount of playing time. With Euro 2024 knocking at the door, Maguire cannot take that risk. However, there are a few issues that will be hindering the transfer. One of those issues is his salary which is £200,000-per-week and he might have to settle for less if he moves.
In that case, Manchester United will have to pay-off to offset the amount of pay cut the 30-year-old will be taking. Yet, he has garnered interest from several clubs, like West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United. Even if Maguire stays, his situation might only worsen. About Maguire’s situation, Coach Erik Ten Hag said last season, “Yes, but he has high competition there with Raphael Varane, who’s fantastic. That describes everything. No one would be happy with this situation [on the bench].”
