Indian women’s team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is under fire for her behaviour during the 3rd ODI against Bangaldesh. Her outrage against the umpires following her behaviour towards the Bangladesh team skipper left cricketers and fans fuming.
Harmanpreet Kaur first expressed her frustration after she was dismissed, as the Indian skipper smashed the stumps with her bat in reaction to the decision. She then went on to criticise the umpiring standards in the post-match presentation. Later, she took a jibe and the Bangladesh skipper, asking her why she was present at the ceremony instead of the umpires.

The Indian women team’s skipper is now facing flak from different corners for her antics. Despite support from her teammates, Harmanpreet Kaur is now facing calls for banning her from international cricket. Two Indian legends have joined the chorus and have slammed Harmanpreet Kaur.
Madan Lal, Anjum Chopra slam Harmanpreet Kaur
1983 World Cup-winner Madan Lal was absolutely furious with Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions and demanded the BCCI to take strict action. Labeling her behaviour as ‘pathetic’, Madan Lal claimed that the Indian skipper wasn’t bigger than the game. He further said that Harmanpreet Kaur had brought a bad name to Indian cricket.

Former Indian skipper Anjum Chopra opined on Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions and said that the latter needed to be more careful in showing disagreement. Pointing out that she could have been careful with her choice of words, Chopra said that expressing displeasure was okay but there was a way to do so.
“When the aggression goes away and she becomes calm I’m sure she would look back and agree that she needed to be more careful in showing her disagreement. There’s no harm in voicing your displeasure, but it’s how and when you do it. She should have been more selective with her choice of words too,” said Anjum Chopra, as per Hindustan Times.

Further, Anjum Chopra questioned why Harmanpreet Kaur had to voice her displeasure publicly at the post-match presentation. She added that it could been communicated in a better manner.
“There was no snickometer or ball-tracking, so it’s a bit difficult to judge. But if they (the Indian team) felt a few decisions did not go their way, could things have been handled better? Why did it come down to the Indian captain going to the post-match presentation and voicing her displeasure? It could have been communicated in a better way. How did the situation scale up to this? The Indian team not playing up to the mark can be a cause of their disappointment but that could have been kept within the dressing room. Going out in public like this (was not proper),” said Anjum Chopra to Hindustan Times.
Harmanpreet Kaur punished by ICC
It was expected that Harmanpreet Kaur would be docked her full match fee and may even be suspended for a few games for multiple violations of the ICC players’ code of conduct during and after the game against Bangladesh. Her comments on umpiring in the post-match interview can also be considered unsporting.
Now, after Harmanpreet’s outrageous action grabbed the headlines, the ICC has docked the Indian skipper 75% of her match fee and given her 3 demerit points for her defiance towards the umpires.
