Hardik Pandya admits he has to bowl more overs to get ready for World Cup 2023

In the past, Hardik Pandya faced setbacks due to a troublesome back injury that affected his bowling performance to a certain extent.

During the second ODI against West Indies on Saturday, India utilized a total of seven bowlers, with Hardik Pandya leading the attack. Despite not taking any wickets, the stand-in captain effectively controlled the game in the 6.4 overs he bowled. Hardik stated that he sees leading the attack and opting to bowl more as part of his preparation for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to be held in India in October-November this year. He also emphasized that he is taking things step by step and hopes for a successful performance in the mega event.

“I have to bowl more overs to get ready for the World Cup. Being a turtle at the moment, not a rabbit. Hoping everything goes well during the World Cup,” said Pandya at the post-match presentation ceremony.

In the past, Hardik Pandya faced setbacks due to a troublesome back injury that affected his bowling performance to a certain extent. However, the dynamic all-rounder made a remarkable comeback during IPL 2022, consistently touching 140kmph and showing no signs of looking back. His leadership abilities also shone as he led Gujarat Titans to their maiden title in their debut season, setting him apart from his peers.

During the series between India and West Indies, the matches had been lackluster until the Windies’ all-round effort injected life into the contest. After India dominated the Test series with a 1-0 victory, the first 50-over encounter seemed to be going in a similar direction, but the Windies fought back hard. Led by the brilliant performances of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, India swiftly dismissed the Windies in the first ODI match.

However, the tables turned in the second ODI when India decided to drop experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It proved to be a costly experiment, as the Men In Blue faltered and were bundled out for a modest 181 runs. The Windies capitalized on this opportunity and chased down the target comfortably in just 36.4 overs.

The Windies skipper, Shai Hope, led by example with an unbeaten 63 off 80 deliveries, well-supported by Keacy Carty’s crucial 48* off 65 balls. The duo’s partnership of 91 runs for the fifth wicket proved to be the turning point after Shardul Thakur’s initial breakthroughs. Kuldeep Yadav also made an impact, taking one wicket, but the Windies remained resilient and sealed a six-wicket victory.
