Vinesh Phogat

All eyes were on Vinesh as the Tokyo Olympics began. She was seeded first in her weught division and a medal seemed to be all but a certainty. But controversy never seemed too far away after her request for a physio created headlines with the Wrestling Federation of India accusing her of indiscipline. Ultimately, Vinesh suffered a shock exit and she went on to describe the problems she had to face during her journey.

In an emotional Twitter post, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth and Asian Games, spoke of her problems openly while declaring her will to keep fighting in the new year and return to the mat with a bang!

2021 is over and it has been a tough year. For me, it has been the most difficult year of my life. I started it off in the best possible manner, worked hard, trained harder, but didn’t get the result I was hoping for.

“Things didn’t work out for me on the biggest stage, but I guess that’s life and I will always cherish the bittersweet memories that this year brought and value all the people who have egged me on with their positive energy.

“As we ready to enter 2022, I am full of hope and optimism. I have always been the happiest on the mat and I can’t wait to get out there again and begin another amazing journey, chasing my dreams, and work towards making my country, my sport, and my family proud again!

Ravi Dahiya made the nation proud with a silver medal in the Olympics. And with 2022 already here, the grappler has promised to work even harder and continue to make the nation proud.

Whatever I have achieved in the last year has been possible only because of my family, friends, coaches, mentors and my supporters. But I don’t want to stop here. I will continue the same efforts in 2022. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year.”

Bhavani Devi

Bhavani Devi had made India proud after ebcoming the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics. She did not stop there and she even won India’s first-ever fencing match at the Olympic Games. Her dream Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games ended in the Round of 32 but her biggest achievement was putting the sport on the map. And she has vowed to keep working hard in order to create history in the year to come.

2021 will definitely stand out as one of the most memorable years of my life. So many years of hard work and consistent support of many people across different parts of the world paid off this year. I will forever cherish all these memories and experiences.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to everyone who has supported me and believed in me. Couldn’t have wished for better media coverage to the sport in India. Thanks to all media teams and channels for popularizing fencing.
