Germany coach Hansi Flick fired, Ex-Bayern coach in contention to replace him

Flick's job was on the line after having a string of bad results & loss to Japan proved to be the final nail in the coffin

Germany on Sunday fired their head coach Hansi Flick. The decision comes right after Germany’s embarrassing 4-1 loss to Japan last night.

Flick only won only four of his last 17 games in charge. He was under immense pressure to deliver but the team looked lackluster as Japan ran freely through the German defence.

Japan scored from the first clear chance they had in the 11th minute.

However, the hosts responded with a goal of their own, a goal that levelled the match at 1-1 at the half-hour mark, courtesy of a well-worked through ball and a left foot shot from Leroy Sane.

The visitors restored their lead just three minutes later and took the wind out of Germany’s sails.

German football statement

Statement from the German Football Association read, “The committees agreed that the mens national team needs a new impulse after the recently disappointing results.”

We need facing that [2024] European Championship a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country,” the statement added.

Flick’s bold assertion

Hansi Flick maintained a defiant front after the defeat, reasserting that he was the right coach to lead the team forward.

“We and the coaching staff are trying everything,” said Flick.

“I think we are doing well and I am the right coach.”

Next in line?

Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as the front runner to replace Hansi Flick in Germany, according to sports outlet BILD.

Nagelsmann was fired by Bayern Munich in March this year following a string of bad results. He was replaced by former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.
