Alexander Zverev vs Sebastian Baez

Alexander Zverev’s Roland Garros hopes hung by a thread on Wednesday afternoon, but the third seed dug deep to prevail in an absorbing second-round battle against Sebastian Baez.

The third seed saved a match point when trailing 4-5, 30/40 in the fifth set against the 21-year-old Argentine Baez, but he held firm to complete a dramatic 2-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 victory in Paris.

Zverev was full of praise for Baez after his three-hour, 36-minute victory. “This is the worst he [Baez] will probably ever feel on a tennis court right now, this moment,” said the German.

The win moves Zverev to a 20-6 record at Roland Garros, where he reached the semi-finals last year before falling to Tsitsipas. His third-round opponent in Paris will be Brandon Nakashima, after the American triumphed 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-2 over Tallon Griekspoor.

Novak Djokovic vs Alex Molcan

The top seed hasn’t lost before the third round at this event since 2005 and kept the streak alive on Wednesday, powering past Slovakian Alex Molcan 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(4). Djokovic finished the day with 40 winners to 19 unforced errors in picking up his 83rd win at this event.

“I’m pleased with the way I’m feeling on the court [and] the way I’ve been striking the ball,” said Djokovic. “I think today was also under challenging conditions and playing against a specialist on clay, someone that is a tricky opponent and coming off from the [Lyon] final last week. It was never going to be an easy match, but I thought I performed very well.”

Carlos Alcaraz vs Albert Ramos-Vinolas

The sixth seed Carlos Alcaraz saved match point in the fourth set and rallied from 0-3 in the fifth set to defeat countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-7(7), 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4 for a place in the third round in Paris.

Alcaraz was the talk of the tennis world leading into the clay-court major, having defeated Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev en route to his second ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. But Ramos-Vinolas had the teen one point from a shocking early exit.

For much of the match, Alcaraz was frustrated by his 34-year-old left-handed opponent and struggled to find solutions, which has been a rarity this season.  But the teen triumphed after four hours and 34 minutes to earn a clash against American Sebastian Korda.

Rafael Nadal vs Corentin Moutet

Rafael Nadal reached the latest milestone in his legendary career on Wednesday by earning his 300th Grand Slam victory. The Spaniard faced a worthy opponent in fellow lefty Corentin Moutet, but had an answer for everything the Frenchman threw his way on Court Philippe Chatrier.

With his 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 victory, Nadal became just the third man to reach the 300-wins mark at the Grand Slams, behind only Roger Federer’s 369 wins and Novak Djokovic’s 324.

Emma Raducanu vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich

The British 12th seed, making her professional debut this year at Roland Garros, had also lost to 47th-ranked Sasnovich at Indian Wells in 2021 in her first match since her shock US Open victory.

Raducanu, who suffered a back injury in the run-up to Roland Garros, finishes her first ever clay-court swing with an overall 6-5 record. The 19-year-old has successfully reached at least the second round on her debut at each of the four majors.

The result continues a strong season for Sasnovich, who has improved her ranking from No.91 at the end of 2021 to its current No.47 thanks to an overall season record of 21-10.

She’s through to a third round meeting with No.27 seed Amanda Anisimova, another former semifinalist. Muchova’s sixth career Top 10 win didn’t come easily. She needed eight set points to win the opener, where Sakkari leveled from 5-2 down, and she was twice an early break ahead in the second set.
