Daniil Medvedev vs Facundo Bagnis

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev made a strong statement with a hassle-free win over Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen in his first-round match on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old had played down his chances of going deep into the tournament after having recovered from a hernia surgery. Medvedev faced an early exit in Geneva last month but he came up with a dominant display against Bagnis.

Medvedev will next face the winner of the first-round match between Laslo Djere and Ricardas Berankis.

Casper Ruud vs Jo Wilfried Tsonga

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s career came to an end after a dramatic and emotional four-set defeat to the No. 8 seed Casper Ruud. Tsonga, playing in his final tournament before retiring from the sport, took the first set after winning the tie-breaker. The second set too was a close one but Tsonga lost the tie-breaker this time and the game went close to the fifth set before the 37-year-old was hampered by a shoulder injury, and Ruud closed out a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 win.

Paula Badosa vs Fionna Ferro

Badosa needed just 54 minutes to dispatch Ferro in her return to Court Philippe-Chatrier, never facing break point in a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Badosa couldn’t have hoped for a better start for her first Grand Slam tournament as a Top 5 seed: The Spaniard served five aces and hit 25 winners against Ferro, a former Top 40 player who’s now ranked No.130 and was in the main draw as a wildcard.

After failing to earn consecutive wins in Madrid and Rome, Badosa’s through to an intriguing second round meeting against Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan, who was runner-up to Angelique Kerber in Strasbourg last week.

Simona Halep vs Nastasja Schunk

Former World No.1 Simona Halep was made to work for a first-round win at Roland Garros on Tuesday, eventually moving past 18-year-old lucky loser Nastasja Schunk 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and notching her 20th match-win of the season. Romania’s Halep, the 2018 Roland Garros champion and a two-time runner-up in Paris, squeezed past the German teenager in 1 hour and 48 minutes of play, thereby making at least the second round in her last eight appearances at the clay-court major.
